SARS and How It Spreads, and How To Contain It

SARS is one form of atypical viral pneumonia (there are other forms too). The cause is being isolated over time.

SARS is spread by droplet infection and very close contact with SARS patients. It could result in death, but many also do recover from it. However, it is only infectious when there are symptoms, which only appear after the incubation period of between 3-10 days.

It is not spread through the air. Infection can only occur when SARS symptoms are present, eg fever above 38ÂșC, dry cough, breathing problems and muscle aches. So if those with these symptoms seek medical attention early and as soon as possible, the outbreak can be contained quickly.

Unless you have been in contact with someone with confirmed SARS, or been to an affected area, you are not at risk (see below on what you have to do if you qualify).
